Reading Habits

Please add a comment in which you describe your reading habits. I am most interested in how you do your reading for school assignments, but it would also be interesting to compare how you read for school with how you read for pleasure. Your goal in this comment is to give a vivid picture of you reading. What would I see if I watched you read? What does it feel like to you when you read? Please write for about five minutes, and post your comment by midnight, Monday, February 12. Try to address all the following:

Where do you read? Don’t just tell where; describe the location, trying to make it vivid for your reader.
When do you read? Obviously, this will vary, but typically, what time of day do you settle down to read? Describe the feel of this time of day.
How do you read? Do you have to have complete silence? Do you do other things while you read (listen to music, chat online, text message, read out loud to yourself)? Do you lie down, sit up, get up frequently?

When I read for school I usually read in my basement on the couch. I usually do all of my other homework first before I read something. By the time I start to read I'm pretty tired and have trouble staying awake. When I read It's mostly quiet except for my sister might be on the computer or phone. I lay down when I read and sometimes I might text message if my phone goes off. I almost never read for pleasure because by the time I get home and do my homework I want to do something other than read.

Up until about 2 years ago i loved to read. Now, it always feels like a chore that I have to accomplish so I can go do something else. I don't like reading all that much except for when I read something sad funny or to my intrestes, like fashion magazines. I usually read before I go to bed or when I am babysitting while the kids are sleeping. I can read almost everywhere and I love to read on airplanes. I can read pretty fast too, although I think I have sligh dislexia because i sometimes read words wrong or think they are different words than they actually are. Reading is one of the only things that I do really well in school. I don't really do anything special when I'm reading, but I do like to visualize things that are going on. I tend to blur out everything around me, so I almost never text or listen yto music while I'm reading. This does not mean I need complete silence to read, I just can't multi-task for my life.

I push the pillows to the corner of my bed and read there.

I read right before bed but pretty far into the night. The feel of the late night is relaxed and calm.

I have to have complete silence or I will get distracted. I do sort of a half lie have sit up.

When my dad is not wording I prefer to read on my basement couch. I usually put a few pillows supporting my back and just read. Sometimes I will put my feet on the coffee table that is in front of the couch. If my dad is not working I will read in my bedroom, sitting in the corner of the bed or on a chair. I usually read when I come home from school, that is when I have to do it for homework. If I am just reading for pleasure I will read at night. It just helps me fall asleep, and it can be very relaxing. I like to read in silence, if there is sound I am easily be distracted. I usually have to read, sitting down. If I have to get up a lot I get distracted.

So as some of you know if I were to list all the places and times in which I read this blog would be a very long and boring blog that would consist of one very bland list. So instead i shall make it a short, mildly interesting blog. I read everywhere I can, walking, during class (oops) and other odd times. I can read in any position I please, I've read upsidown for 2 hours. The only audible noise that can be gleaned from my reading is the occasional curse at some character that is being extremely disagreeable. Oh and one last thing I have to say is that my favorite reading time is at night when i should be asleep (oh my that was a dull sentence) So for the few that actually read other people's blogs before posting their own, those were my exravagant reading habits that you've been dying to know.

I love to read books that I have chosen. Reading for school can become very boring. Whdn I read I like to sit in my nice warm bed witha pillow against my back and blankets on. I always read when there is some light but not a lot cause it hepls me comcentrate better.
Normally when I read it is right beofre i go to bed. Which is between 9pm and 10pm. I like reading at night becuase I have already done everything I needed to accomplish in that day and so I treat my self to a good book!
When I lay down to read I love to have complete silence and after I have layed down I don't get up again untill the morning. The reason I read at night is becuase I have 3 sisters and they can be very loud, but when there in bed there is no noise.

I usually read in my room laying down on my bed or if no one is home i will read in the room that's hottest or coldest depending on the time of year. I read only when i am interested in a book. i really hate reading for school because i usually am not interested in the book. I read when it is really quiet and i am nice and calm, usually in the morning or at night. While i am reading i need to be doing something active whether it's just shaking my leg, or chewing gum but i need to be doing something else

When: I usually read right before I go to bed. I am usually tired at this time of night.
How: When I read, I am usually text messaging and listening to music. I frequently get up. I do not exactly enjoy reading.

I read usually on my nice soft bed or my computer chair/futon in my very relaxed room where i can be calm and collected. I read in my room or on a sofa in my living or family room where it is quiet and I don't get bothered by people. I usuall settle dwon to read just before bed or in the late evening. This time of day is very relaxed and dark. i don't listen to anything or do anything when i read other than to just READ!!! lol. I read in whatever position is most comfortable at the time and place.

Where I read is usually only at school, in our desks, during silent reading. I don't have much time to just sit down and read on my own.
I read typically during 5th hour, or in the afternoon. But, if I am reading on my own, it's mostly at night just because it's quite, and not much is going on.
When I read it usually has to be completely silent, or I end up thinking instead of reading, or listening to whatever noise is around me, and I then forget I am reading.
I sit up when I read, and I don't do anything but sit and concentrate when reading

When I read for school I usually read in my room or on my couch. Most of the time I read on my bed. I put a cupple of pillows behind my back and i half-sit half-lay down. When I read I usually listen to music because for some reason whenever im working music helps me stay focused. I dont really like to read so I dont read that much for pleasure. When I read it usually is at night time before i go to bed because I feel it is calm and relaxing. It's also a nice way to end the day.

I dont read that much, i never read for pleasure because reading isnt something i really enjoy doing. For school reading when i do read its usually when im at home or outside somehere. I dont really care so much if it is quiet or not, i an concentrate easily if it is loud. When i read i do sometimes listen to music or text, but i can pretty much stay kinda focused on what im reading.

when i read i read on my bed in my room. i have a little smooth jazz to help me read and a little while later, i get sleppy. when i am tired at night i read. i never read for pleasure although i should. i can be easily distracted so i do need a quiet place to read. i do move around a lot when i read so i can make up distractions. hopefully my reading will be a little bit different.

I like to read but it depends on the genre of the book. You would see a very interested face and a quiet body if you looked at me when I was reading. I feel good when I read because I feel like I'm learning things very easily wtihout having to do a big assignment for them. I am pretty fast when it comes to reading but I can get distracted easily if it isn't quiet.

when I read, I usually read at night on the floor or on my coutch.
I never do my homework before i read. I usually don't read very much outside of mandatory reading for school and I don't always do that. If I read I usually am on an airplane or it is after i have finished CSAP testing.

I used to love to read. I still do, just not for school. It isn't even that the boks are bad. I assume that when a book is given to us at school it is going to be bad. I love to read on my own and the books that I choose. When I read I read all over the place. It's mostly in the summer when I read. I love to read outside, and then I will leasure inside where the cool air feels great. When I get the time during the school year to read I usually read on my couch downstairs in the living room. I like to read things that are mysterious, or drama filled. It may sound funny but I love to read things that are sad. It makes me feel like my life is so much better than their's. When I read I need it to be silent, or quiet. I can read downstairs while my stepmom is cooking, but if the t.v is on I can't read. My mind wonders if there is a lot of noise around while I read. I love to read, I just have never found books that I have to read very intresting.

When I read, I seem to loose track of time. I will start reading and when I'm done I wont know how long I have been reading for. I think a good book can be better than a movie, it stays with you longer and you can see things the way you think they should be. I usually read books and then give them to my sister so that she can read it and we can talk about it. I mainly read at night or Saturday morning when I dont have anything to do. I dont need absolute silence but I cant read when people around me are having a conversation or I get stuck reading the same sentece 50 times. I have to be comfortable also if im not comfortable I dont tend to read as long.

Sadly, most of my reading is for school. Sadder still is the fact that that reading is mostly about teaching. It's not that I don't love to read about how to do what I do better. It's more that I remember what it was like to be able to select my own books and open them to find new ideas about the other things in life that interest me. I should make more time to do reading like that.

What was interesting to me as I read your comments was the number of you who mentioned that you don't enjoy reading because it's usully for school and you assume that school-selected books are going to be boring.

If that's true, how can teachers improve reading in our classes? What would motivate you to read. If we let the selection process open, would you read books that challenge you? How can teachers help students learn to love reading?
