I thought that this final section of the book was very thrilling and emotional. The mudslide and fire were huge events in this section. The fire practically ruined Candido and Americas lives and then a mudslide comes along and makes their lives worse by killing their baby. Also it seems like candido is cold and helpless. Yet he sees Delaney floating down the mud and he saves his life. I mean delaney did so many horrible things to him but he still saved his life. I think that is very courageous and smart.

I thought the last discussion in class was very sucessful. This discussion/section was my favorite because it was easy to follow and relate to. I felt that this section was explaining how life can save you if you are nice to one another. I really liked Phil's news report because it defintley summed up the whole chapter and the entire book. I also liked the end of the book because it was a good cliff hanger for you to think about what happened to Candido and America when they lost their daughter. I hope the author writes another book to keep up with. I am very interested in this book. Also I didnt like the fact that Socorro/Candido and Americas child was blind. I thought that it was a good decision on Americas part to move back. I felt that Socorro's diagnoses of blindness was a symbol that shows that Candido didnt have a plan of what he was going to do when he got to America.

I would like to say that I'm kind of glad that Delany got in a car accident because he was being pretty mean trying to get Candido or that mexican that he saw in trouble. I think that it's kind of like karma. It kind of sucks that there daughter died in that flood. After all of this though, Candido was still nice enough to save Delany's life.

In the group discussion on November 21, they brought up the thought of how different the two couples in the book were. Then, someone brought up the thought that they were actually quite the same. I agree with that. First of all, they do have extremely completely different lives, but they in a way are the same. For example, they both cope with loss. Delaney's family lost their dog that meant so much to them and Candido's family lost their baby at the end of the book and their little shack in the mudslide. Even though they live in completely different enviroments, their inner feelings were the same when they went through all of that. In conclusion, Candido's and Delaney's family are different but also similar.

The final section of the book was sad, as usual. My ticket was about the mud slide, and I explained in a news situation, that a mudslide had occurred and ruined many landscaping features, and that a missing blind child was lost in the slide. I thought it was really sad how everything was basically sad, and depressing in the book and then it ended with their child lost. However, I like how Candido was recognized for saving the man. All in all I thought this book was sad, it showed me how to not take things for granted and it gave me a different look on immigrants, and even though their illegal, they have nothing and we have to realize if we were in that type of situation we would want to live in our country, for freedom.
