Fahrenheit 451: Final Blog Assignment

Now that you have finished reading Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, look back at the pre-reading survey we did. This will serve as the basis for your final blog writing about the book.

Choose one of the following statements and decide whether Ray Bradbury, the author of Fahrenheit 451, would agree or disagree with it. Then, write about this idea on the class blog. Use specific examples from the book to support your assertion. Your writing should not repeat the ideas of a previous comment, so be sure to read the ideas already posted. You will receive less credit for repeating ideas than for original ideas. Please complete this first comment by midnight, Thursday, October 5, 2006.

After you have posted your original comment about the book, go back to the class blog and respond to at least one other student’s comment. Be sure to address your response to the student, so that it’s clear who you’re responding to. Your response should support or dispute what the other student said; don’t just say “I agree” or “This is wrong.” Add your own examples to support or dispute the comment. Again, you will receive more credit for original comments than for repeating previous comments. If you would like to enhance your chances of an A, you may respond to more than one of your classmates' comments, but you can earn an A if you do two quality comments (one original and one response). Please post this second comment by midnight, Monday, October 9, 2006.
Your grade will be based on both of these blog comments considered together.

Choose one (1) of these statements to write about. Explain whether you think Ray Bradbury would agree or disagree with the statement, and support your assertion with specific examples from Fahrenheit 451.

 History books are accurate.
 Television news is accurate.
 Mass media is a good source of information.
 Watching TV is bad.
 People watch too much TV.
 TV programs are realistic.
 Censorship is never justified.
 People must be treated equally.
 We should always seek happiness.
 Governments should always try to make people happy.
 We should always seek peace.
 Governments should do anything to achieve peace.
 People should always obey the law.
 Technology is good.

*We should always seek happiness.*

I think Ray Bradbury would agree with "We should always seek happiness." I think he would agree with this because in his book Fahrenheit 451 his characters read when they were not suppose to. However, they found happienss in reading and so they kept reading. And, since his characters sought happieness I think, that he believes that statement as well since Montag fought for his happiness and maybe Ray was referring to something that you have to fight for your happiness to be happy.

I agree with Phil. I believe Ray Bradbury would disagree with the opinion that the media is a good source or information based on what Granger was telling Montag about the search for him, Montag. the police lost Montag but could not admit it because they would ruin their perfect record and upset the public morale. They found an innocent person and killed him in the intrest of the public. The news today is not always true, with the news reporting everything, even if it is not proven yet. For example, a few days ago there was a story on the radio that gave the listener the impression that Terrell Owens tried to commit suicide. Two days later T.O. stepped out and said he was in the hospital because his painkillers and a daily supplament mixed to form harmful side effects.
This news report proves that not all media is completely accurate.

Ray Bradbury would agree that watching t.v. is bad becasue that was all that Millie did. Montag found this very disturbing. Some people become way too consumed with television, ans in this book, even the children learned by watching t.v. I think when Montag says to Millie, "Does the white clown love you?" That he is showing her how pathetic her life is and how boring/dull she has become.

I agree with Joy's statement that the government should not try to make everyone happy at all times... this seems highly unlikely to ever happen now or in the future. Whatever the case may be, someone is always unhappy(at least sometimes).

I don't believe that ray Bradbury would think that technology is good in general because in the book it ruined the family life of many families for example, montag's wife considred the people in the parlor family. Also the mechinical hounds were machines used to hunt down criminals, but was abused by the police and used to kill innocent citizens that were used a decoys to make the public feel safe. Maybe Ray would think that technology was good and that the people were bad.

I'm agreeing with Cole's comment about "Goverenments should always try to make people" I think that no matter what someone will disagree with what the government thinks or does.

I'm agreeing with Amy Bs comment i think that ray wouldn't think that due to his characters broke the law and its part of life doing what you want isn't always following the law.

Hmmmm the phrase "we should always seek peace" is, in itself a loose concept but I believe Ray Bradbury would disagree with this statement. For one reason through out the book F451 Guy Montag slowly begins to disrupt his peace in lew of the knowledge of books. Another is that the original society in F451 has acheived a degree of peace where in most everybody is happy and that society is blown to smitheriens in the end (ha, smitheriens is a cool word). Finally he created a perfectly peaceful character that is content with their life: Mildred. She is the ultimate peace, she has no cares, and does what she is told; what is more peaceful than that! However Bradbury writes her persona in such a negative way you end up almost hating her in the end. So although "we should always seek peace" is a very hopeful and light, Ray Brabury, and myself, would agree that it is not always true.

I agree almost fully with phil in that Ray would disagree that telivision news is acurate. Ray had said it very cleary via the guys in the wood when they watched Guys supposed death. However news is a relative concept in the area of determining what is news. News seems to play off of a few main emotions, mostly fear and anger. The reason for this being it ahs been determined that the human brain reacts the strongest to these emotions. So in some way the news gives out information, reliable or not it gets the fact that an event had occured. Even if the facts are scewed sometimes to create a reaction, ultimately to create more viewers, can you tell yourself after you watch the news that an event has happened???
